Safety

Please share your teaching resources and lesson plans for the classroom and laboratory safety here.

Safety workshops that focus on YOUR state and the needs of K-12 teachers. These workshops are the most comprehensive science safety workshops offered in the country. They include a resource CD designed in conjunction with the top safety educators in the country. Fifteen states have versions of the CD designed to include the state specific laws, codes, and standards - the only resource of its type in the country. Chemical Safety for School Administrators
http://www.epa.gov/oppt/pubs/chemmgmt/resourceguide.pdf \\Teaching Science: Lab Safety, Norman Heer, (suggested by [KMG] Scout Report), Before entering the world of pipettes and Geiger counters, budding scientists will need to know about lab safety. Science educators will benefit from this laboratory safety site, developed by Professor Norman Herr, who teaches at California State University, Northridge. On his site, Professor Herr provides topically organized links that fall into the areas of safety standards, chemical hazards, chemical storage, and five other relevant topics. Within each section, visitors will find links to state safety standards, sample laboratory safety contracts, and fact sheets on chemical hazards. One potentially delightful classroom activity is the laboratory safety “scavenger hunt”. Through this activity, students will learn about storage requirements, chemical risks, and other potential delicate matters.”

Total Science Safety System CD - State Specific

The CD that is in more schools than any other!! Available in fifteen state-specifc and in a national version. This CD includes the original chemical inventory database, innovative chemical labeling system and the most comprehensive safety information available today. The chemical inventory system contains only those chemicals found in K-12 textbooks and has been reviewed by Clean Harbors for chemicals that should be eliminated from your inventories. Available in a National (general) or state specific (fifteen states). For more information contact JaKel, Inc. at http://showcase.netins.net/web/jakel/

Chemical Management System CD-Second Edition
This CD is revolutionary in that the Chemical Inventory Spreadsheet contains over 2400 chemicals. It tells anyone in a school system if a chemical is for elementary, middle or secondary school use or if the chemical requires "Justification: or is Banned." Hopefully, this CD can be used by school personnel to prevent the reordering of hazardous chemicals that require private waste companies to dispose of them. The recommended maximum quantity to be ordered is also listed. NFPA ratings, Contact rating, Fisher Storage System, Flinn Storage System , J.T. Baker Storage System and Shelf Life are also listed. Waste disposal recommendations are suggested and MSDS website reference is also listed. EPA and DOT hazardous waste codes are also included for chemicals. The chemicals can also be searched by their common names(synonyms)as well as their IUPAC chemical names. The CD is ordered by the LEA. A site license is needed for each middle and secondary school, elementary schools may use this free if the LEA adopts this CD. See http://www.sciencesafetyconsulting.com for an order form.

Green Chemicals Purchasing System The Green Chemical Alternatives Purchasing Wizard is a web-based tool. The wizard is a guided process that allows the user to search from a select list of solvents commonly used in the laboratory, and the associated process. The Wizard identifies less hazardous and more environmentally benign chemicals or processes that may be substituted, and provides journal references as well as URLs to information that is available online. Users may print article information or have email sent with the URL for the article reference. Anyone can use. MAC of PC friendly. Can locate chemical by name or process.
