Inquiry

Modeling for Understanding in Science Education provides in-depth inquiry units on natural selection and earth-moon-sun dynamics through modeling. You can use all or parts of the unit in your classroom (I found the modeling evidence for natural selection section very helpful, and my students really enjoyed the cartoon activity). I know that the natural selection unit is for high school classrooms, but some parts of the unit can be used for middle school. I have not used the earth-moon-sun unit and so don't know exactly who would find that useful.

Inquiry resources and teacher training can be found through the Center for Inquiry Based Learning (CIBL) who provides focused Inquiry workshops for K-8 teachers in North Carolina. CIBL provides science kit training for those kits adopted by North Carolina that are aligned to the NC SCoS. They also provide training in the use of custom built science kits for grades 6-8. The important difference is their attention to the use of Inquiry in using any of these kits. They also provide customized inquiry training to meet specific school or district needs.
